Imagining the future

I’m starting to think about the future when I graduate and how I will find a job when so many people are jobless.

When I started here in September there was a tutor but he left. Then another tutor left.  It’s a bit disappointing because you get used to a tutor and start planning your work.  The same happened at my old college! Now we have a fresh face, our new tutor Lucy.  She’s my first female tutor. She’s giving me feedback and tutorials. If there’s something wrong with my work, she suggests ways to improve it.

So I am looking for work experience over Christmas as I haven’t worked in a graphic design company before. Bring it on! People have a rest over the holiday but I don’t want to be sitting at home over Christmas. So I want to try and get into a company before then. I’m looking at companies in the Greater Manchester area because I couldn’t afford to live away from home if I’m not getting paid. I don’t want to travel too far but am happy to travel around Greater Manchester.

Hopefully I can get my business cards out to people and get work experience.

I’m already thinking of ideas for my major project.  This has to link to my critical journal which is about typography and the cross-cultural influences between East and West.

Check out Reza Abedini. He’s an Iranian graphic designer who uses contemporary Persian typography in his work. His work is similar to American graphic designer David Carson’s.

Peter Saville, the British artist, was influenced by the work of Jan Tschichold who uses Swiss style typography.

I’d like to go to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. It’s a complex of palaces and forts which was built in the 14th century by the Moors. It would be a great place to get inspiration because of the Islamic and Moroccan style architecture and art, including tile work.
